How to chalk your hair
By kayyluh
If your looking for an easy non-permanent way to dye the ends of your hair, hair chalking might just be the thing for you. People have been chalking their hair for a very long time so don't worry about it killing your hair because it won't. This is very fun if you want to try something new out but don't want to go permanent. I like to add different colors like the picture to the right, I think it looks unique and gorgeous, everyone will think you took forever and did a dip-dye on your hair and you didn't. There is just a few simple steps to get this look, you will be satisfied with your new look! And if you don't like how it turns out then just wash it out and try it again, so simple! If your interested in learning how to use chalk in your hair then keep reading. Remember hair chalking is fun and definitely not as dangerous as dying your full head of hair.
What you need and directions!
These are very simple and short instructions and yes this is all you need to do this technique.
What you need:
Your favorite colors of soft pastels. (Can be purchased at craft stores and art stores as well)
Heat tool: straightner, curling iron, etc.
Directions:
First you will need to get your hair damp where you would like to apply the colors. Where you put the chalk is where it will be in your hair so be careful. Then you will need to rub on the pastel on the damp section of hair. Straighten or curl on and your ready to go! You can also do this with dry hair, just wet the pastel and rub onto your hair, it's that easy! Have fun using the chalk on your hair! This technique is unique and different so go and show it off. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you enjoyed it, please leave your feedback below! :)

yess its safe. much better than actually dying your hair. I have dark brown hair and I used pink and blue and they both showed up so whichever colors you like :)
I'm really thinking about trying this, it sounds great. I've never heard about this before. Thanks :)
you should its fun and very pretty! Thank you for reading:)
I've never thought of doing this before. I have to admit, I've used magic marker a time or two. Thanks for sharing!
This is too cool! I thought you used sidewalk chalk, but I see now what you use. I must try this! Thanks!
Haha well don't use that marker anymore these are soo much better on the hair! Thanks for commenting!:)
Nope no sidewalk chalk sunshine! Thanks for reading and commenting, let me know how it turns out! :)
One problem do not use oil pastel it will make your hair sticky and is harder to get out just buy soft pastels not oil pastels.
Yes you are right Sam!:) Thanks for letting everyone know!
Hey im thinking about doing this for A few days. So all u do is wet ur hair a lil, rub the pastel on ur hair and striaghting it?
And does it damage ur hair?
Also how long does it stay in?
Yes Cait, all you need to do is get some pastel chalk colors damp the hair and straighten it on. It will damage your hair some just like pretty much everything but it is soooo much better than actual color. When you wash your hair it comes out, this is not permanent. If you try it out let me know hope you like how it turns out!:)
so I just did this... and it's not coming out.... suggestions?
Hey Alisha! I'm sorry it's not coming out right, it could be your pastels and maybe if you have color in your hair. Sometimes products just don't mix well, the colors might be to light for your hair. Try getting a different brand of soft pastels and darker colors.
whats the different between using oil pastel chalk and soft pastal chalk? i accidently bought oil pastel chalk but i heard it will stain you hair, is that true? how long did it last using oil pastel chalk?
Hi Katie, I wouldn't use the oil pastels on your hair because I have heard that too! Use soft and find your recipt and go return them. I am very sorry for the mix up. The soft pastels will wash out when you wash your hair which is why this technique is not permanent. :)
Where do you buy this chalk?
You buy it at craft stores like michaels, hobby lobby, etc. :) I believe Walmart may carry it. :)
Is it really nessasary to have a heating tool?
I would say it is because the heat makes the color stick longer. And hold that gorgeous color but I guess it isn't totally necessary you just won't achieve that full look. :)
It this just regular chalk
No they are soft pastels. :) I don't think it would turn out right if you used regular chalk.
Hobby Lobby only had chalk pastels, it didn't say "soft" pastels. Is it still ok to use?
I think there both fine the regular chalk pastels are just kind of make your hair feel icky. But it won't stain your hair though:)
So it only stays in intill you take a shower and it comes right out?
(with the right type of pastel that is?)
Yes it will come out with the right pastel :)
Would Walmart have soft pastels?
And if only stays in till you wash it out in the shower, right?
I think they have them at walmart. And yes it will wash out with shampoo and conditioner.
Is there anyway you can make it stay longer?
Unfortunetly no. You could also use extensions or go all the way and die your hair these colors. Good luck :)
